Book Clubs Are Worth It: A Short List

A few reasons why you need a book club in your life. And why, if you've started one, you should absolutely not give up on it, even if it feels like nobody's doing the reading and it's not worth the effort. It is, I promise!

1) Reading needs to be encouraged in people

We just can't stand to lose reading. It's way too precious! In the age of sixty-second attention spans and short-form content, we need more readers. It's an absolute treasure to be able to get lost in a book. Those of us that are readers need to hold onto that and encourage it in the ones around us. A book club is a wonderful invitation to do that.

2) Book clubs diversify opinions and foster human connection

Even when the book club gets intense, even if you're the only person that disagrees with literally everyone about that one character, you are still broadening your ability to understand other perspectives and discuss them in a respectful and productive way. This is a much needed skill in our society today.

3) Book clubs are fun excuses to go all out (and have a built in theme!)

If you're struggling to plan your book club, remember, the book is a built-in theme! If you want to put up a Youtube video on your TV of ocean waves crashing into the shore because you're reading a beachy book, or tie-dye t-shirts with indigo dye because you're reading Indigo Isle, do it! Go all out. Why not?

4) Book clubs build community and deepen friendships

If you join a book club, there's a fairly high chance you like to read, and another fairly high chance you're going to find other people who like to read, too. That's shared interest, baby! Which is, surprise surprise, one of the strongest indicators of lasting friendships.

5) Stories are made to last

Authors write to share their worlds, words, and honestly, their own heart and soul. They want to stir something inside of you. When a story grips you so much that you get the feeling that you just have to talk about it or something is going to explode inside of you--this is what the author intended to do! So today, consider joining or starting a book club.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't add one of my favorite things about reading--getting to know God through His word. He reveals Himself to us through His written Word, the Bible.

Reading is special, guys.

Book clubs are too.
